Keeping Heating Costs Down with Curtains

Keeping Heating Costs Down with Curtains

20th Sep 2016

Winter is quickly approaching, and with the season come rising heating costs. There are many ways to insulate your home and keep in as much heat as possible. The kitchen is one often-overlooked room when it comes to keeping heating costs down. These kitchen curtain ideas will help you keep the heating bill low and your kitchen nice and toasty.

DIY Kitchen Curtains

DIY Kitchen curtains are an easy weekend project. Making kitchen curtains starts with choosing the right fabric for your kitchen. Any fabric store will have plenty of options to choose from. In general, you’ll want to select a fabric that compliments your kitchen and any motifs that are in place. Contrasting or loud patterns may distract from existing décor.

Curtains can absorb kitchen smells pretty easily, so washing them in a regular basis will keep them looking and smelling great. Easy to wash fabrics such as cotton or synthetics may be ideal in high-use kitchens. These are not only easy to throw into the washing machine, they hold their shape well.

There are dozens of options when it comes to kitchen curtain ideas.

  • Opt for a traditional tier and valance look. These curtains are actually two separate sets of curtains that don't close, but allow light in while still giving you privacy to cook and socialize.
  • If privacy is a must, you can combine the tier and valance set with a short set of curtains and tiebacks.
  • Sash curtains may not keep out the cold, but they are great for giving your kitchen a light and breezy look during spring and summer.
  • Whimsical patterned fabrics can enliven any kitchen no matter the season.
  • Neutral tones may not be exciting, but they are great at complimenting
  • Layering curtains can be the best of many worlds. Layered curtains can combine thick and decorative curtains, patterns with neutral, light and dark colors, and even the types of fabric used.
  • Add vertical ribbons for more depth and create height in a low ceilinged kitchen.
  • Mix and match patterns on the hem, or fringe curtains with lace for a distinguished, classic look.
  • For décor enthusiasts, change your curtains throughout the year to keep your style updated with the changing seasons.
  • Choose insulated curtains in order to keep heat in and the cold out. If you love a particular pattern or design but the fabric is thin, don't worry! You can sew on an insulating backing with a sewing machine and an hour or two.

Insulating your curtains has year-round benefits. You'll keep heating costs down during the fall and winter. During the summer, insulated curtains will work double-duty and help keep the heat out!

How to Hang Curtains

If you don’t know how to hang curtains, it’s easy! With a few common household tools and your new curtains and accessories, you’ll have your windows decorated in no time. This guide assumes that you have already measured your windows and purchased appropriately sized curtain rods and curtains.

What You Need:

  • Curtain rod
  • Curtains
  • Rod hangers and hardware
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Sheet rock anchors (optional)

Method:

  1. Measure 4” above the window frame and use a pencil to make marks at 3” away from both edges of the window. If you are using three rod holders, make a third mark at the center point. Make sure that your measurements are even, otherwise your curtains will hang crookedly.
  2. Screw holes into wall at the marks and install sheet rock anchors if using. Sheet rock anchors will give rods with heavy curtains more stability.
  3. Screw the curtain brackets into the wall at the marks.
  4. Place the curtains onto the curtain rod.
  5. Hang the curtain rod with curtains on the newly installed brackets.
  6. Congratulations! Stand back and admire your handiwork!

Now that your curtains are installed, you can add curtain accessories such as tiebacks and sashes if desired.
