Small apartments, studios, and micro-houses are popular for singles and couples alike. They’re compact and affordable. However, they’re also a challenge to decorate without resulting in a confining feel!

Fortunately, you can easily trick perception and make a small space seem larger than it actually is. Get the most out of your small living room with some of these helpful decorating tips for a small living room.

How to Decorate a Small Living Room

The most important thing to consider when designing a small living room is a plan. It doesn’t take much for a small room to feel cluttered.

Designing a small living room which feels larger than it actually is may take some time and careful purchases, but it’s completely doable! There are three main categories to consider when crafting your design: visuals, furniture, and maximizing space.

Use Visuals

Visuals can make a room light and airy, or dark and drab. Know what can help and what can hurt before you plan!

  • Opt for bright colors. Dark colors are good at making small spaces seem smaller, while brighter colors are more fun and eye-catching. If you have a dark sofa, consider looking into slipcovers so you don’t have to buy a new sofa altogether!
  • Add plants to your living room. Green and growing things can brighten a room. If you are short on horizontal space, then hanging planters will draw the eye upwards and make good use of vertical space!
  • Choose a light-colored rug for your living room. While it may seem like a rug will clutter the room, it all depends on the pattern and color. Avoid dark colors and dense patterns, as these can make a room’s design appear busy.
  • Hang plenty of pictures and art on walls, especially ones with tall ceilings. This will draw the viewer’s eye up and make the room seem larger than it is.

Choose Your Furniture Carefully

Heavy, dark furniture is a sure way to make your living room look tiny and cramped, while lightweight and bright or neutrally colored furniture gives the room space to breathe.

  • Avoid bulky furniture, and choose small-scale options. For example, choose a loveseat instead of an extra-long couch.
  • Clear furniture can open up a space while providing seating, storage, or dining options. The entire piece of furniture doesn’t have to be clear; just a single panel in any piece can work to bring neutral space to the room.
  • Mirrors, especially in rooms with few or small windows, can brighten the room as they bring extra depth and brightness to the room.
  • Invest in multifunctional furniture. Since space is at a minimum, you want your furniture to do extra work. Consider storage ottomans, nesting side tables which can pulled out and used as mini drink or food tables, nesting or folding seating options, and so on.
  • Instead of a single sofa, give your room extra space and try placing comfortable individual chairs around a coffee table.

Maximize the Space You Have

Every room, no matter the size, has empty space. Larger rooms have the luxury of letting this empty space sit unused. Smaller rooms need to maximize that space for best effect.

  • Build in storage and use vertical space! Bookshelves, DVD racks, or other cabinets are gr
  • eat in large rooms, but they will quickly make it difficult to navigate around a small living room. Floating shelves and wall racks on the walls can still store your treasures, but won’t have the bulk of heavy furniture.
  • Make use of corner space. Corner cabinets, wedge corner shelves, specialty side tables, and even sectional sofas can all make use of the empty space in corners.
  • De-clutter your living room. Do you really need that tabletop dancing Santa on display year-round? Individually, small items don’t take up a lot of room. A dozen small items, however, start taking up space! Display only your most important or significant belongings in a small living room and give them the spotlight to shine.
