Decorating Your Home for Fall

30th Aug 2016

Offering a plethora of warm, seasonal colors, fall offers a lot of fun and easy autumn decorating ideas for the home. Options can range from decorating pumpkins, gourds, and pine cones to create fall foliage inside the home.

When creating attractive DIY fall projects, use these elements together across the mantle, as a centre piece, on the porch, or stagger them artfully down the front steps. Plus, you can try to create a look that can carry your fall decoration ideas through Halloween and Thanksgiving seasons as well. Here is how to get started.

Fall Pumpkin Tableau

Bring fall into the foyer by creating an attractive tablescape. You can start by picking out a few batches of colorful fall leaves and arranging them in a tall glass vase partially filled with water. Using this as the centrepiece of your décor idea, put together an array of seasonal gourds ranging in a variety of colors, sizes and textures for variety.

Flat gourds of graduated sizes can be stacked atop each other and covered with a glass cloth for a creative effect. Or add in a smaller glass cloche filled with painted or bleached pinecones for a dramatic effect. Finish off your fall décor idea by placing smaller gourds around larger items and scattering a few bright fall leaves along the table.

Silver Acorn Adornments

Create an eye catching autumnal display by gathering a few acorns and brushing them with liquid or spray paint. You can either go with just silver or gold each, or create an eye-catching piece by using the two together.

Start off by collecting the acorns and prepping them before painting. This step is important to prevent mold or worms from invading your perfectly prepared fall decoration. To prep, rinse acorns lightly and bake them for about two hours in a 200-degree oven. This will dry out the acorns and get rid of ay worms inside. Allow acorns to cool overnight.

Simply paint with liquid gilding the next day and put on display.

Dress up the Door

Another fall decorating idea that offers versatility as well as an element of style is adorning the door with an autumn wreath. You can use easily available yet versatile items such as wheat stalks and autumn leaves to create a perfectly welcoming wreath placed on the front door.

To make the wreath, gather up a good quantity of fall leaves, perhaps up to 4 dozen. Press and coat them generously with Outdoor Mod Podge. Let leaves dry completely on trays lined with wax paper and sprinkle with a little crystal glitter for added sparkle.

Using a straw wreath for the base, twist into a rope and tie ends together to make a circle. Hot glue on some wheat stalks and secure on with fishing line. Finish with attaching coated leaves onto the wreath and put on display.

Doily Pumpkins

Fall home decorating ideas cannot be complete without a pumpkin display of some sort. For a vintage look, cut and drape a doily over the stem and place on the front porch for a bright focal point.

To prepare the doily, cut open a hole in the centre, and place over the stem to check that it fits snugly. Set the doily aside and using clear craft glue, brush over the pumpkin surface. Place doily back in place and press to glue it in place. Apply a second coat of glue on top, especially around the opening of the doily to prevent it from fraying.
