Your wardrobe may be meticulously curated and adored but if your garments aren’t properly stored then what is the point? Hanging your attire properly not only keeps your clothing looking great longer but also helps to organize and manage your closet!

Hanger Types

There are countless types of hangers out there, so how do you know which ones are right for you? Different types of hangers are meant to support different types of clothing and they all have their own pros and cons. Here is a quick guide on some hanger basics:

Hangers to avoid:

  • Wire Hangers: These are usually just the hangers that come with your dry cleaning, and they should only be used to transport your clothing from the dry cleaners to your ‘nice’ hangers at home. If you are spending the money to have your clothing dry cleaned chances are your garments are too nice to be languishing on wire hangers! Wire hangers are cheap and can damage your clothing if left too long so it is definitely best to use an alternative hanger.
  • Plastic and Retail Hangers: What’s great about these hangers is that you’ve probably been given most of them for free when purchasing your clothing. Plastic hangers are sturdy and can hold a wide variety of garments, however these hangers are also bulky and can take up more room than necessary in your closet. Because you are likely procuring these hangers when you purchase your clothing there will be a lack of consistency in the size, shape and weight of the hangers -- which can lead to a very messy and overcrowded closet.

Hangers to invest in:

  • Velvet Hangers: These hangers are a wonderful and more affordable alternative to wooden hangers. The body is made of thin but sturdy plastic with a flocked velvety surface -- great for keeping your clothes from slipping off. The size and shaping of these hangers provides a stable and versatile hanger for the majority of garments without any of the damaging side effects of wire hangers or the cluttered messiness of plastic hangers. As a bonus, because they are so thin and uniform, these hangers will squeeze easily together in a closet should you need some extra hanging space. They also come in a variety of great colors and are sold in an assortment of amounts so you can purchase however many you need without going overboard!

  • Wooden Hangers: Are the ideal hangers for every closet! they are sturdy, durable, and let’s face it they just look classy! if you are looking to add a bit of luxury and sophistication to your closet these are probably the hangers for you. These hangers come in a variety of finishes so if you are looking for something to up your closet decor you won’t need to worry about your hangers clashing with their surroundings. Constructed from sturdy thick wood these hangers provide a great deal of surface area to support your garments and preserve their shape without the damaging puckering you might see from wire hangers. While wooden hangers are a great deal larger than velvet hangers they will not clutter your closet the way plastic hangers tend to do -- and they may even help you par down your wardrobe, keeping everything visible and manageable! If you find yourself needing more space try investing in wooden hangers with clips, so you can keep your suits together or double up on blouses and bottoms.

Investing in the right hangers will result in a neater more inviting closet - allowing you to see what you have while keeping your garments in pristine condition. Make sure to look for the correct hangers for your clothing i.e. hangers with tiny notches or not slip material for strappy dresses or large wooden suit hangers for you heavy coats.
